Rules of the Game
The simple version of U7 football, so you can help the kids on the pitch.
The basics
U7- 5-a-side (5 v 5), U7, following the FA Mini-Soccer format.
- Size 3 ball, small goals, small pitch, short blocks of play.
- It's development football, no league tables, no scores published. It's about touches, confidence and fun and everyone playing.
The three that catch everyone out
Know these and you'll be the most helpful voice on the sideline.
Goal kicks: the retreat line
When we take a goal kick, the other team has to go back to the halfway line until the ball is kicked. So encourage the kids to look up and play it out, not just boot it. It's a great chance to start a move.
No throw-ins: pass or dribble it in
When the ball rolls off the side, we don't throw it. We pass it in along the ground or dribble it in, with opponents standing 5 yards back. Teach them to keep it on the floor and take their time.
No offside
There's no offside at this age. The kids can be anywhere on the pitch. No need to hold a line or worry about being too far forward.
A few more
Cheer effort and skill, not just goals
- Cheer the good stuff as much as the goals: a pass, a bit of teamwork, a cross, a clever touch. Let them play and make mistakes, that's how they learn.
- One or two simple shouts (pass it, look up, nice and calm) beat a stream of instructions. A calm sideline helps them think.
- Win, lose or draw, it's about them loving their football.
